Which is your favorite rag by Scott Joplin? I of course love his maple leaf rag, but I probably favour his magnetic rag. This piece has a sort of classical feel to it, yet it's very lively and entertaining! Very Happy I also love his new rag.

You can listen to samples of all of his rags here

Of the ones listed, I must also say the Magnetic Rag is my favourite. I particularly love the slow part before the ending section in Bb minor (I think...)--very haunting! I love most of Joplin's other rags, though, particularly: The Cascades, The Chrysanthemum, Elite Syncopations, Search Light Rag, Nothin' Doin' (or is it Somethin' Doin'? I can never remember), Easy Winners, A Breeze From Alabama, and Pineapple Rag. I also adore "Original Rags" which isn't actually by Joplin, but which appears in one of my Joplin books--Joplin chose some excerpts of other popular rags and another man arranged them into a very effective piece, which I played as a sort of finale at the last concert for my teacher before she left for Taiwan. Everyone loved it.

I chose the Maple Leaf Rag, I've had a lot of success playing it, and enjoyed it very much! Also, I haven't really had the time to appreciate the others, I have, however played the classic, the Entertainer. Wink

The Cascades is definitely my favourite, especially when it's played faster than it's supposed to be played. i also like that Magnetic Rag and Search Light Rag very much. But yeah, all of them are nice.

It's really so hard to choose--all the rags by Joplin are wonderful examples of the form--but I chose The Entertainer, which rightly deserves its international fame. You left out Joplin's amazing ragtime waltz Bethena, by the way Wink.
Best Wishes,
Philip Daniel

Sorry philip, there are just so many great ragtime pieces, I couldn't include them all. I just chose what I thought were the more famous rags. Bethena is indeed a wonderful piece aswell Smile
