If it was not meant to be performed, what are you meant to do with it?

Kunst der Fuge will never be performed - it was never finished...I'm deep.

Perhaps it is only meant to be treated as an art and to be studied thoroughly.

I have made piano arrangements of the Art of the Fugue (oh the blasphemy! piano arrangements ) that I play in reflection or private study--never public performance .
Best Wishes,
Philip Daniel

Yesterday I got this CD called "Gouldberg variations". It's two cd set with best of Glenn Gould's bach. on the 2nd cd there are organ performances of gould doing the Die Kunst der fugue and as bonus, there are interviews and video footage of him playing those fugues. The last is just soo deep and emotional, the sudden silence, where bach left this world.....

great performances....

Bach dying during the composition of the XIV fugue is apocryphal. I think the mofo just didn't get around to completing it.

@Philip Daniel: Bach didn't specify what it was to be played on. Personally, I think it sounds best on piano.

Yes, I know. That doesn't necessarily mean that he didn't have an instrument (or instruments) in mind, though.

It is "art of fugue". therefor, it is not really a piece in it's own right. it's just like a example of the way a fugue works.

How long is it? wot is it like? i heard it had weird clefs?

tell *moi* all!!!

The Art of Fugue (dKdF), is a rather controversial work and exhaustive amounts of arguments and studies have been made on the work. To answer one question, l_p, the score is rather odd - not because of clefs per se, but because it's written in open score, where each voice has it's own staff.

Although there are many, here's one site that discusses this work:
