When compared to the popularity of certain preludes, Rachmaninov's Etudes-Tableaux have a more humble position in the composers oevre. The reasons are easily heard; the melodic intensity in many of his earlier pieces is here replaced by harmonic angularity and rhythmic pungency. In the Etudes-Tableaux Rachmaninov suggests an affinity with his early fellow student Alexander Scriabin.

Pianists Stephen Kopp, Hanna Shybayeva, Dejan Sinadinovic and Karine Gilanyan perform some of these interesting works.
