What do you think of these exercises? I just got his book and will start studying them as soon as possible. For those of you who have studied them, did they really help, and how long did it take to get through them all?

I myself have never played it as I believe you can acquire the same skills through playing real music, too. Also, you might want to check this thread and especially its 4th last post (by Bernhard).

Do you know that Horowitz insisted all of his students to learn all 24 etudes by Chopin, and expected to hear a new etude everytime there's a lesson.

Is your point that because he is wrong in that area, that he is wrong in all others?

I always hated all the Hanon exercises, which is why I rarely ever did them.. my teacher didn't like them either, so I had been brought up on Czerny and random weird unknown (actually nice melodies.. ^-^) Ukranian, Russian, and other Slavic composers... like the one of whom I did my debut SDC etude, Shijte (lol well.. saying it sounds like that) now they were da shitz

That's rather amusing considering he doesn't seem to have been able to play some of them well himself.

I've never played Hanon. I play Czerny almost everday, but never Hanon. I never knew that Hanon was quite so popular, though .

I never play hanon anymore... Unless I'm using it for scales and arps. lol,(part II) and that's basically it. I never liked doing part 1 and part 3 is useless compared to Etudes by Chopin, Liszt, and Rachmaninoff. And a lot others. Maybe Mozkowski's virtuosic ones, brahm's, schumann-paganini, and czerny... Those are more useful than hanon prt.3.

Horowitz may have hated finger exercises; yet Gieseking was most certainly for them.
