I've got the 5-CD set of Liszt and the Ziff/Ziff Jr. CD you mentioned. Excellent as always!

I just ordered Les Introuvables de Cziffra, the mammoth box set...

Actually, no; Liszt isn't predominant in the Introuvables CD collection. In fact, I'm about to start another topic in this area to post the entire repertoire list...because it's mouth watering. Also, the CD should come in two or three more days...

the symphonies where sir. neville mariner and the ac. of st. martin in the fields but other that i don't remember...

I realised today that it's been "long enough" since I last bought something and happened into a store where, as I found out happily, I could take advantage of a "buy 3 get one free" sale. So, I got these four cool CD's:

Bartok: Sonata for unaccompanied violin; Two Rhapsodies for violin and piano; Rumanian Folk Dances for violin and piano; Contrasts for Violin, Piano, and Clarinet (Helios)

Brahms: Ein Deutsches Requiem, Otto Klemperer (EMI: Classics)

Paganini: Violin Concerto no. 1; Sarasate 'Carmen' Fantasy (supercool piece, I heard it on the way home); Introduction et Tarantelle; Zigeunerweisen, Itzhak Perlman and Lawrence Foster, conductor (EMI: Classics)

Brahms: Symphony no. 1; Gesang der Parzen op. 89, Claudio Abbado and the Berliner Philharmoniker (Deutsche Grammophon)

All are pieces that I haven't actually heard yet, with the exception of the first violin concerto of Paganini.

Hmm either we forgot about this one as well, or I missed another one of those memos....

Anyway, I just got the "Liszt vs. Thalberg" CD with Steven Mayer playing:

Liszt: Niobe Fantasy, Carl Maria von Weber's Konzerstuck in F minor trans., Benediction de Dieu dans la solitude

Thalberg: "Moses" Fantasy; Fantasy on God Save the Queen

It's an interesting idea for a CD and I really just bought it for the Niobe and Moses Fantasies (I mean, come on...), but I think it could be a lot better. The pianist is mediocore, and has a very stereotypical "American" sound (not to offend anyone here...), but I must say I just finished listening to his Moses Fantasy and I think he did an admirable job with that. The technique doesn't seem to bother him at all, but as is the case with a lot of pianists, he doesn't really capture the real spirit of the music. Although he has the sort of restrained refinement needed in Thalberg, he doesn't seem to "let loose" as much as he should for the Liszt; and the Benediction piece actually kind of irritates me, because it doesn't fit in at all with the other pieces, and takes up a huge amount of space on the CD. These people always want to show us that they "are artistic poets as well" blah blah blah...but, I mean, if you're going to do a CD about the competition between two excellent Romantic salon pianists (and it's a great idea, I'd like to do a recital like that some day, as some of you know), you have to get into the MOOD of flat-out no holds barred competition. It's great that you can play slow stuff as well, but for such a setting, there is a certain degree of showiness and flamboyancy required, I think. Well, that isn't to say he does a bad job--the rest of the CD is quite average, well-done but not superb, it's just that the actual *choice* of the Benediction was highly unecessary. He could have easily fit on another Liszt, or preferably Thalberg, operatic fantasy, maybe the Don Juan or something....but no...

Oh and I also (finally) got the first volume of the Liszt Etudes from Dover. I officially declare it my life's work to learn every last one of those etudes...

Some CDs I just got from the library : Perahia playing both Opp. 10 & 25 of Chopets, Richter playing Rach 2nd and Tchaik 1st PCs, the "Gouldberg Variations" (figure that one out ) and Frederic Chiu playing the Chopets and four Chopin Rondos. All great stuff!
