my favourites are -
the rakocksy march thingy, which im gonna learn sometimes cos its so brutal and kick-ass
and also the wagner/liszt liebestod recording - his last ever recording - VERY moving stuff - perfect pianism
these are 2 of the greatest recorded performances in all of history - truly cataclysmically phenomenal musical experiences to cherish for all time.
what are your favourites and ones that you perhaps dont like as much as other people, but can objectively call one of his best?

Rach 3 in Vienna, he was 75, and delivered one of the best performances of that pieces I've ever heard.

thats nothing compared to the liebestod which was recorded just a couple of days before he died at age 86.

I've never heard Vladimir Horowitz playing his complete transcription of Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2. I've heard a few that said it was Horowitz, but it wasn't his transcription. I did hear Volodos playing the transcription. Amazing stuff.

wagner was a TRU MOFO, everyone check out lugansky's dvd - the wagner transcription on there is just out of this world.

unfortunately i haven't had the chance to hear Horowitz last recordings (i will buy the cd when i get the dosh), my favourite horowitz recordings are the live rach sonata 2, Reiner rach3, Ormandy Rach 3, Tchaik 1st, the Stars and stripes forever, carmen variations, HR2, shubert-tausig-horowitz Marche militaire, the live polka de W.R. i also love his live Scrabin 8/12 its much better than the studio version i have.

I must agree with comme about the Wagner. The many died only 4 days after that, and he still was very passionate and touching...

Comme, I absolutely agree with you. Those are my favourites too. I would also like to add various Scarlatti sonatas and Rach's Moment Musical Op. 16 No. 3.

Thaikovsky Concerto #1 with Szell (1953) and Barbirolli (1940)
Rach 3rd with Barbirolli, Coates, Rodzinski
Brahms 1st with Toscanini
Rach 2nd sonata (1968), 3rd movement as encore (1976)
Stars and Stripes Forever
Danse Macabre
Danse Russe (from Petroushka)
Scarlatti Sonatas
Clementi Sonatas
Scriabin Sonata #5, 9, Vers la Flamme, various preludes and etudes.
Chopin Polonaise Fantasie
Schumann 3rd sonata, Kreisleriana
Barber Sonata
Prokofiev 7th sonata
and yes, I agree that Liebestod is a crowning gem to his fabulous career, quite fitting.
