Twelve tone technique

Postby zeniyama » 24 Oct 2007, 21:26

I'm trying to venture into something new, and am beginning to try some atonal type stuff out. (been listening to too much Sorabji and Scriabin.)

So, how exactly would I use Twelve Tone in my compositions?

Also, here's an atonal composition I made a while back, how's it sound (for something that's supposed to be atonal)?

Your Spanish Dance is actually quite interesting. I listened to it a moment ago and enjoyed the rhythm and melody. The ending was, well, also interesting. I wonder, what kind of effect are you seeking with it? It seemed to end with suspension, but perhaps that could be effective, too. Good work!

Well, with the ending I was trying to build up some energy, and then drop it all of a sudden, if you know what I mean.

Like, in the horror movies where the girl is home alone, and she hears something in the kitchen. So, they build up alot of suspense as she creeps slowly over to the kitchen, and then suddenly they get rid of all suspense by having it be the cat that made the noise.

Anyways, now I'm trying to work on an impressionist Etude I started quite awhile ago, because now I have some neat ideas of what to do with it.

I have a question. Looking around online, I find atonal composition method a little... hard to grasp. Does anybody know of any good books on atonal theory that someone who knows almost nothing about it can understand?
