Mine are Ligeti with out a doubt. His etudes are incredible. But I like other contemporary composers like Rzewski and Boulez.

Yes, Ligeti is by far my favourite living composer..although I can't say I know very many. Ratuavaara is definitely a second, and I'm positive I could come up with some more if I knew a little bit about them.
One should either be a work of art, or wear a work of art.

You know, some people just have natural talents-like some people play the piano but aren't very tall.

my knowledge of living composers extends to john williams, so I have to say him.

But of course, besides the above, he did do a great job w/ starwars/jurrasic park and indiana jones...and probably more, idk about those though

actually now that i get to thinking (a rare happening), quite a few of the songs we play in band are written by living composers, but i can't think of any, except for greg hillis, who wrote "Quest for the Undaunted Knight" which is a great song. But I don't know any of his other songs

then on teh other had there is the finnish legend: kristian setala (aka nerd) whose fugato is a true work of art...

now that i've rambled far past my due, please feel free to add your comments

I am not so sure about Boulez. I think I will put the russian classical/jazz composer/pianist Kapustin up there. Also I like William Bolcom(is he still alive?)

Ennio Morricone 8)Once Upon a Time in the West and Once Upon a Time in America could've been operas.

The composer who wrote the music for the movie'Titanic'is by far my favourite! He made the flute music resemble true Irish Folk Tunes ! I also love the music from the 'Phantom Of The Opera"!Completely awesome! :)

hands down - nikolai kapustin
i love his jazz etudes, etudes in 5 different intervals, 2ns sonata, variations, i could keep going on. he picled up where gershwin and rachmaninoff left off, as some say.

i also like rzewski's works a bit, especially his north american ballades and his de profundis (melodramatic oratorio). also, ligeti is cool. his etudes and musica ricercata are pretty cool.
