The Laureates of the Chopin Competitions

Postby Paulina Dybowska » 15 Mar 2010, 12:09

I would like to introduce a brand-new, unique publication:

640 pages
Language: English
ISBN: 978-83-910515-7-3
Pub. Date: 2010
Publisher: Selene (www.selenemusic.com)

A truly unique book, the first of its kind. It tells the history of the renowned International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, spanning almost ninety years, through the artistic biographies of its 117 laureates. The author describes their rivalry and efforts to be the best, the assessment of each pianist’s playing and the laureates’ complicated, often tragic, lives. The book lists all jurors, 161 names in all, who have been responsible for selecting the finest interpreters of Chopin’s music. The publication contains as many as 885 illustrations, including reproductions of 16 manuscripts of Chopin’s works, hundreds of unique photographs, satirical drawings, concert posters and programmes, many of them never published before as they come from hard-to-access collections. 1600 names are listed in the index at the end of the book. The English-language version of the book offers international researchers and piano art lovers information, which until now they have been unable to read because it was originally written in Polish.
