Liszt - Mephisto waltzes

I didn`t want to make a poll because then most people would just say I love number 2 I like number 1 etc. I want to know what you feel about the Mephisto waltzes.
In my oppinion they are among Liszt greatest works for the piano. And I am having a hard time wondering why only no1 is famous. The other are also very nice in my oppinion.

The mephisto waltzes was a part of my introducing to Liszt`s music. And I had never heard anything with a devilish caracter like these waltzes before. They are so mysterious and so very Liszt. When I listen to them I can almost see the devil dancing around to the music and maybe playing the violin while he is dancing .
I agree that some of Liszt`s music is only to show-off but these pieces certainly aren`t. They are very serious works and the three late ones shows the unfamous late Liszt. I don`t understand why so little of the late Liszt is famous when late Liszt in my oppinion is better thanearlie Liszt in some ways. :?:

I haven`t heared no 3 yet but I love all of the others.

no1 is probably my favourite and it is also the most famous one. I can\t understand why some people play this piece like it is a circus piece when it isn`t.

No 2 is also great and the middle part is extremely beautifull.

No4 is the only one I have played. Mainly because it is th easiest one. But the piece is truely great late Liszt and this piece is really a Mephisto waltz. It is difficult to think of the piece as a waltz but it is really devilish in caracther maybe more so than the others.

So if you have ever heard any of the other what do you think of them?

-The Mephisto

If you didn`t know a mephisto is a kind of devil wich is described in Goethes faust. But no where in the Bible.

I don´t feel much for them, for some reason. Maybe I haven´t listened to them enough, or perhaps they are too deep or devilish for me :).

My favourite is no. 2. I've played all except no 4 as I haven't attained a score of the completed version. As I said before I like it with the andantino included but still feel a bit reluctant to play the "howard version" (unsure how much is Liszt's own).

Of course, the difference in style between no. 1 and nos 2-4 is rather exaggerated, and the pieces belong to completely different periods of Liszt's life. Also, I believe only no. 3 and no. 4 started out as piano pieces.

About no4 I have played it. But that was before I had heard Howard`s version with the andantinio. Since I can`t play any piece which goes fast slow fast. Exept some sonatas. I would love to play this piece:D
If you(Helling) my swedish neighbour knows how to get the sheets to the version Howard plays I would be very happy.

Unfortunately I don't have the score to Howard's version of the Mephisto Waltz no. 4 but at least I know it exists in the state music library of Stockholm.
