best recs of kreisleriana and davidsbundlertanze?

Postby elvenpianist » 16 Sep 2006, 21:10

(my absolutest favoritestest schumann pieces, lol)

I have:

Davidsbundlertanze: Pollini (really good, I think)

Kreisleriana: Cortot (almost too poetic and slow, I think, lol); Kempff (far too sane); and Pollini (again, pretty good)

What are others I should hear?

Geza Anda for both; Horowitz's RCA recording (1968) of the Kreisleriana is also wonderful. Gieseking's Davidsbundler is excellent.

I only have Brendel for Kreisleriana and he plays it quite nice I think. Not too "extreme", like some other people tend to play the piece. It's just about whether you like his playing or not...

Hmm, don't know whether the Brendel is really good. I listened to it again and I must say that it probably could be played a little more exciting. But that's just Brendel, he never uses loud fortes or much rubato. For this romantic masterpiece his interpretation is maybe a bit classical I think. Maybe I'm wrong

Is that for Kreis or David? Or both? :)

Mm, I was playing through davids today.. I wish it wasnt so hard, or that I was better.. lol. The only movement I know is no. 2, which is one of my favorites, but I want to play the whole thing so badly!!!

Kreisleriana, don't think there's a recording of him playing Davidsbunder, unfortunately.

My favorite's Horowitz. His Schumann fantasie far outstrips Brendel's In my opinion.
